Churchill Square Beautification/Enhancement Project

Today (March 4, 2019) I put forward a notice of motion in Council to use a small amount of the Churchill Square Parking Meter Fund for enhancement/beautification projects in the Square this Spring and Summer.

The proposal is to use $25,000 of the fund (a pool where all parking meter funds for the Square get deposited) to put in place, for example, some of: flower pots, banners, benches, decorative garbage cans/recycling bins, bicycle racks and trees (or others depending on ideas you might share!)

If you have any ideas or comments on this, please post below or send me a note at ifroude@stjohns.ca

The motion will be debated at next Monday’s (March 11, 2019) meeting.‬

The Motion:

Whereas Churchill Square is a prominent and popular location in our City and in the Churchill Park neighbourhood that is used daily by many residents and small businesses;

Whereas Churchill Square is a hive of activity and has had many new and growing businesses set up shop, and that there is a lot of enthusiasm in the community to further enhance the space;

Whereas the Churchill Square Parking Meter Fund, is a fund that is collected through the users of Churchill Square;

And whereas, residents, businesses, customers and the City are committed to improving this central square in our City to encourage walkability, neighbourhood connectivity, and small business development;

That Council direct the use of up to $25,000 of the Churchill Square Parking Meter Fund, via the City’s Parks Division, Public Works Department for capital projects to begin in early 2019, which could include, but not exclusively: flower pots, banners, benches, decorative garbage and recycling containers, bicycle racks and trees.
