Should we have a Municipal Auditor General?

I’ve promised to continue keeping an eye on the City budget. We’ve now taken a step forward to ensure we have the right mechanisms in place to provide comprehensive and in-depth scrutiny of the City’s spending. We have established a panel to review and advise on the best governance process for the City’s Internal Audit function. A part of this review is to determine whether it makes sense to put a Municipal Auditor General in place at City Hall.

The panel is made up of: Terry Paddon, former Auditor General; Lynn Zurel, Chartered Professional Accountant; and, Simon Lono, as a public representative.

I look forward to the conclusions of the panel later this year. We’ll then debate and decide on any changes necessary to make the budgeting and spending process transparent and accountable to the people of St. John’s.
